Constitution to Officials: Stay In Your Place

I am glad to take up the mantle of the loyal opposition in Federal Way, Washington, and to be one of many contrarian voices speaking through the soapboxes of the 21st Century. Public officials should not be getting us involved in wars that our troops are not engaged in and that Congress has not declared. If they want to be more expressive than the duties of their job allow them to be, do it outside of their government capacities, like any other American citizen, as that’s their God-given right. But you can’t use your official position to speak for the city or the jurisdiction you preside over. Ferrell talking about foreign affairs does not necessarily reflect the viewpoint of the city, even if the City Council agrees with him. However, issues of war and peace are so importantly serious, the City Council may need to make an ordinance to get this editorial point of view across, or at least a resolution. Our “conservative” City Council, by the way. Don’t hold your breath.
